Work and play

Workplay came about after an extensive research on creating a simple solution to aid remote workers stay more productive and live a healthy balance. Mixing ‘work’ with ‘play’ has proven a recipe for an all round successful life.

My role

I worked on the project as a UI/UX designer and logo designer, under the guidance of my mentor/teacher and learnt a lot from peers during course.

Challenge accepted

Remote workers face several challenges which include; easy distractions, procrastination, ergonomic problems, boredom, feeling unfulfilled, et al. Follow design thinking process, create a prototype, test solution and make necessary iterations from feedback.

The solution

A simple productivity app, with no on-boarding, straight to results. From research “ tailored on the research principle that mixing work with play can boost productivity, keep the mind refreshed and energized.

75% of participants got easily distracted at home, entertainment, chores, relationships,

A simple solution was to block out your time in minute blocks that suit you and that way can stay on track of activities, manage time, get tasks done, all the while having fun! Ergonomic issues are mitigated when you engage in activities in between time working on your desk.

You can label your tasks, move them around in order of priority, set your timers in-between and you can always make adjustments, add a minute or two.

Goal is to stay productive while working remotely in a healthy balance between work and play.

Design decisions

Distinct colors were used to clearly distinguish between work mode and play mode. The blue is focus mode and yellow is for wilding.

Designed simple, so it needs no learning process and it feels natural once you interact with it. It's straight to the point and results achievement oriented.

A tip of the day section to stay productive, what you'll want to read to uplift your day and keep you focused.

It takes one step to begin using the app; 1 - open the app, 2 - work/play mode.

The process

Design thinking process was emphasized through out the project. Thorough research carried out among 20 participants (tech students). 67% of participants had three similar challenges with current platforms and improvements they would appreciate; personalization, community support and fun learning.
